Interview with Mia Hoddell

Today I am doing my first ever interview! And my first ever victim, sorry I meant willing participant, is Hoddell, author of the paranormal romance, Deadly to Love, book 1 of the Elemental Killers series. The book can be yours for just £0.77 or $0.99 now from amazon!

1) What inspired you to write Deadly to Love?
After writing my first trilogy (The Wanderer) I wanted to write something more light-hearted and fun. I knew I wanted to create a romance with a modern twist and stay away from high-school, so I started experimenting with social games on my iPod. It was from some of the messages I received on there which generated the idea for Deadly to Love.

When I started writing though, I decided I needed a paranormal element as I felt restrained to realism. I prefer to create my own worlds (even though my island in Deadly to Love is on Earth) or have an element that allows my imagination to run free.

I wanted the lead characters to stay human and when I found the Elementals they seemed like the perfect antagonist. After that everything just fell into place during the planning stages. I based some of it on real life experiences and the rest was down to my imagination asking “what if the world was alive and fought back?”

2) Which was your favourite character to create and why?
That’s a tough question as I love them all and depending on the scene, my favourite changes. The character I had most fun with in Deadly to Love though was Jack. He has a carefree, easy going manner and is the joker of the group so I could let go when writing his sections. However, I have really enjoyed creating a new character in the sequel as they haven’t turn out as I planned. Every time I went to write a scene with them in, they would do the opposite of what I wanted. So, although they caused me numerous plot changes they was fun to develop due to the unpredictability.

3) Have you got more planned for the characters in Deadly in Love?
There’s a lot more planned for the characters in Deadly to Love! The sequel is going through the final stages of editing right now and I’m a quarter of the way through writing the third installment. There will be four books in total so there’s a lot more action, heart-break and romance for Kai and Serena to go through yet.

4) What helps you to write?
I find instrumental music really helps me if it fits with the mood of the scene I’m writing. By plugging my headphones in, it shuts me in my own little writing bubble so things don’t distract me. It is also a great way to avoid talking to people. Most of the time they understand you don’t want to be disturbed and if they don’t… well you can pretend not to hear them. It’s a perfect excuse.

I also find the night helps me. I can’t explain why, but at around 10pm my brain wakes up and decides I should start writing. I’m not sure if it’s because everyone’s gone to bed, it’s quiet or there are no distractions but I find it easiest to write. It just flows at that time so I’m slowly becoming nocturnal.

5) What do you think makes a good book?
For me a good book has to have romance in it, even if it’s a tiny amount. It also has to have a fast plot, plenty of action and a unique view either on the genre or characters i.e something that isn’t vampires. I love books that bring fresh paranormal beings or different concepts into reading.

6) Are there any memorable books from your childhood?
I didn’t really start to like reading until I was fourteen; in fact I used to hate it. It was impossible to get me to sit still and read for more than a few minutes, despite how much my parents/teachers nagged me. The first book I read willingly was The Diamond of Drury Lane by Julia Golding so that is probably my most memorable book. I can still see the look on my mum’s face when I told her I wanted to buy it; she was shocked and a bit doubtful!

Anyway it turns out I just needed the right book to get me hooked on reading as now I can’t stop.

7) What book have you enjoyed reading the most recently?
Lately I have been editing and writing all day so all the books I have on my tbr pile have been put on hold, as I feel I should be writing if I sit down for too long. The last book I read was Angel Fever by L. A Weatherly and loved it. I had waited just over a year to get my hands on it and when it was released early I screamed. It was the best ending to a trilogy I’ve read in a while and definitely the book I have enjoyed most this year.

8) What genre do you like to read?
Mainly, I read YA and NA romances as I’m just a sucker for the feel-good-factor and happily ever after. I don’t understand paying to make myself cry though (with movies or books) so will never go near them if there’s a hint it won’t end well.

Also, I prefer books I read to have some kind of paranormal twist/element, as for me it allows my imagination to run wild creating the author’s world. This is probably why I like writing paranormal books, there’s more freedom with the creative side.

Praise:
“I couldn't put it down. So I finished it last night and all I can say is WOW! This book was amazing and different.” Brianna (Book Blogger)
I loved how the author took a different approach to writing a love story in modern times with the paranormal element present. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. Marvelous!” Kathy H (Amazon Reviewer)
I will admit I scoffed at the way it started but in the end I had fallen in love with this story…completely untraditional it was a very original idea, not to mention modern. This story had such a good plot and the story structure was sound. Kacii – The Kooky Bookworm (Book Blogger)

About the Author
Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.
Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.
