It is from her rediscovered family that she learns about the telepathic gifts that she has inherited. As you may be able to guess from the title of the book, there are scenes of a sexually explicit nature in The Succubus Gift, though they are part of the story rather than there to be overly erotic. There are also some descriptions of violent acts which may disturb some readers. This is definitely a book for adults!
The Succubus Gift is unlike any book I've ever read (well apart from Broken Dolls, also by B R Kingsolver, which involves some of the same characters) particularly in the way that the mythology and the world are created. This is one of those books where you can just tell that the author knows more about the world than is described in the book itself (and I suspect some of that will come across in the next 2 books, which I am super excited about reading now!) In my opinion, this is a good thing, as it provides a well rounded story with plenty of substance!
Now, onto one of my favourite subjects: The characters! In this case the main character, Brenna. I liked her, a lot, though she was a physically attractive character, she had her insecurities, particularly whilst she was unaccepting of her Gifts. She also didn't just accept things straight off, which is a serious flaw that many characters that are introduced to paranormal worlds seem to have. She was just well rounded, and that made her likable. Even when she did something brave she wasn't just the hero, she had to suffer the consequences, no matter how big or small they were.
Similarly, I thought that the relationship between Brenna and Collin was well written, mainly because neither of the characters were perfect (as in as people, after all I like flawed characters which technically makes them perfect characters for me!) and neither was their relationship. Through out the book I was wondering whether or not their relationship was actually going to last, and the mystery will remain for anyone who hasn't read this book at least!
The whole attitude towards relationships in The Succubus Gift was quite refreshing. Instead of there being magical, love at first sight, relationships, there was dating and sleeping with multiple people, and none monogamous relationships. It is refreshing cause of the take on 'real' relationships as opposed to the fairy tale relationships that are often showed in books.
The last thing that I wanted to share is a particularly insightful quote, which was one of the quotes that can be found at the beginning of each chapter. Well, I found it insightful at least!
When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution ans is willing to take command. Very often, that person is crazy.
