Hadley and Dominic are madly in love, and are engaged to be married, until one fateful day when Hadley is in a car crash and dies, but she doesn't quite die, because in that moment Hadley realises the truth, that the whole world is dead anyway. Earth is a practice run for life, and now she is a spirit guide, her true form, she tries to convince Dominic that he is dead too. But along the way she needs to convince Dom's sister, Emerson to tell the truth about a pretty big lie that is driving her to distraction.
When I read the synopsis for this book my first thought was that it was such an interesting concept, and that it could either work, or be a massive flop. I'm glad to say that it worked really well, though it is still somewhat a mystery about how being dead and not knowing works, but I didn't feel that that really affected how much I enjoyed the story.
Something that has just struck me now is how refreshing it has been to read a book with adult characters that hasn't really made a big deal out of sex (it wasn't not mentioned as such, just wasn't made a big deal of). I don't really mind either way, but I thought it worth mentioning!
I loved the character of Hadley, she was so normal! She reacted exactly like a normal person, well maybe not reacted, but she just was a normal person. So often you get main characters who are just magically able to deal with things, whereas Hadley knew she couldn't deal with certain things, and made mistakes like a normal human being. On top of that she wasn't made a big deal out of in the appearance department. It was mentioned that she was pretty, and that Dominic thought she was beautiful, but there was no otherwordly beauty about her which always seems a little unnatural.
I liked Emerson too, or at least I did by the end of the book, up until then I kind of disliked her for some reason (not too sure that I can explain that one!) But she certainly grew on her. It was probably something to do with the fact that her and Dominic grew closer.
This is such a unique book, and I loved it, there's apparently a sequel planned and I am already interested to see what that has to bring!!
