Halloween Short Story Blog Hop!

Welcome to the Halloween Short Story Blog Hop, hosted by Sarah C Snider, the idea is to write a short story, poem or other fictional work, all of your own, so bloggers are able to do something a little different on their blogs!

Read on for my short story, Awakening, a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with a paranormal (if not out right spooky) twist! (Yes it has probably been done to death, but I enjoyed writing it! Please let me know what you think!)

Awakening by Laura Greenwood

There once lived a King and Queen, who desperately wanted a child. Seeing their desperation, the Dark Power granted them their wish, but once the child was born he revealed the cost of the King and Queen’s gift. On the eve of her 18th year, the Princess would return to his power, and live out her days in darkness. The Queen’s sister, who was of no little power herself, was unable to lift the curse, but was able to alter it. On the same eve, the Princess would fall into a deep sleep for 100 years. If left to sleep to awaken naturally, the Princess would be restored to the Kingdom, but if awakened even a second earlier, the Princess would return to the Darkness.

For 17 years, I had been told that tale, not believing it to be true, and even though I could see the pain in my mother’s eyes, and the worry on my father’s face, I refused to let a silly children’s story scare me. How wrong I was. The day before my 18th birthday, I pricked my finger, and fainted, or I thought I fainted, it turned out that the curse was real, and I fell into a deep sleep, waiting to awaken naturally, or to be awakened by my Prince, I’m not sure which idea scared me more.

***

I feel like I’m burning. Like two halves of me are fighting for control. It seems strange to think that life goes on around the cursed; I can hear them talk, and feel them move, I can even smell the coppery sweet smell of their blood pumping through their veins. That’s when the fighting starts again, one half of me sickening at the smell, the other revelling in it.

Over the years, there have been people trying to kiss me, they want me to awaken, to love them, to be their Princess, but the curse isn’t designed like that, there is only one Prince for me, I’m sure of it, or the other kisses would have worked. One kiss and I would belong to the darkness for eternity, half of me wants that, the other half wants anything but the boredom that sleeping for decades brings.

***

I lost count of how many years I have been sleeping at some point around 45, it must have been at least another 45 years since then, which means my curse is entering its final stages, yet the two halves of me are still at war, after close to 90 years of fighting, you’d have thought that they would have held a truce.

Someone cut their finger. Suddenly my mind stops wandering, and my senses heighten, picking out where she is. I say she, I’m certain it’s a woman, you can tell the difference, there’s subtle hints in the blood. There’s something different about this though, there seems to be a lot more blood than I can normally sense, it is as if someone has had their throat cut rather than pricked their finger. And there’s something else, a hint of something I don’t recognise.

Suddenly I can feel a hand stroking my cheek, down to my lips, and the smell of blood is stronger, that half of me is beating to get out. I can hear the faint sound of breathing as someone leans towards me, and I know what is coming, enough people have tried to awaken me for me to know. A pair of lips brushed mine, but on them is the taste of blood, and that is all it takes. My eyes snap open in time to see the man step back and look at me.

He’s tall, with dark hair and eyes, eyes that I could get lost in. His lips are smeared with blood, as well as his hands, though somehow his clothes seem to have stayed clean. The sight should shock me, but it doesn’t. Some where deep inside, I always knew that this is what was going to happen, even without the curse, this was my destiny, and this was my Prince.

I swing my legs around, putting my feet carefully on the floor, I know I should be aching, or feeling other side effects of having been still for so long, but strangely I don’t, in fact I feel more alive than I ever have. A smile plays at my lips as I look back to my Prince, and then my gaze moves past him and lands of a heap of rags on the floor. Except that it isn’t a heap of rags at all, that is the woman whose blood I smelt earlier, the woman whose blood woke me, realising this something stirred inside me. Following my gaze, my Prince chuckled deeply, and said one word in his deep voice, almost a growl, “Come.” He held out his hand to me and I tucked my hand into his, passing the woman by with a look of longing.

Excerpt

“Kaddy, wait.” I heard Mike trailing me as I turned out of the Wheel Barrel.

I pressed a hand to my temple and sighed. “Yeah?”

“You okay? I know you didn’t get a lot of sleep last night.” Mike scratched the back of his head and looked down at me, worried. “Maybe some lunch will help.”

“What I need is sleep, and what needs to happen is for me to stop having these stupid night terrors.” I leaned back against the hot brick building for a moment.

“You can’t help it. It’s not your fault.” Mike leaned on his shoulder next to me, his hands deep in his apron pockets.

“I know, but I hate it. Why can’t they stop?” I smacked my hand to my forehead and sighed. Against my palm, my skin felt too warm. Was I getting sick? Great. It was the last thing I needed. “Do I feel warm to you?” I dropped my hand and looked over at Mike, giving him permission to touch me with a simple confirmation from my eyes.

Slowly raising his arm, the back of his hand pressed against my cheek. “Damn, Kaddy. You’re burning up! Do you feel all right?”

I shrugged. I did feel all right, just a little warm. “I feel fine. I need some sleep. Promise to plan on going to bed early tonight?” I doubted he would keep this promise. He and I always stayed up late writing music.

Mike got a playful glint in his eye. “You know I’m a night owl. No promises there.”

I sighed and rolled my eyes. “We both are.”

Mike still had his hand pressed against my cheek until it shifted up to tug his gray beanie down on my forehead. “Maybe it’s just my awesome hat that’s making you overheat. Who wears a beanie in August?” he joked and I playfully scowled at him as I readjusted the knitted beanie.

“Oh, I’m sure that’s it,” I laughed and gave him a gentle punch on the arm.

“Whoa.” He took a step back. “You been working out or something? That hurt.” Mike held his upper arm like I had socked it with everything I had. I stood there waiting with my “really?” look and raised my eyebrows in anticipation for his mischievous face to appear. If Mike was anything, he was a jokester. Just like I expected, a few seconds later, he cracked a smile on his lips and started laughing.

“You always think your little jokes are hilarious!” Even when I rolled my eyes, I couldn’t stop his infectious laughter from causing me to laugh.

“Kadster, we know I tell the best jokes. I eat sarcasm for breakfast every day.” He winked and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. I didn’t shy from his touch.

“So do I, but no one but you find anything I say funny.” I looked up at him as he walked me to the corner of the block, the direction of home. Only Mike called me the Kadster. Actually, he had a lot of nicknames for me and I didn’t mind it. He was one of the few I would let getaway with calling me things other than my name.

“It’s because everyone is just jealous of the awesome friendship we’ve had since we were eight. Haters gonna hate.” He shrugged and his other hand pretended to dust off his shoulder. Mike was the only friend I counted on for anything. Long ago, we made a pact, and so far, he’s kept every word he promised to keep.

Short Story: Pressed for Time by Andrew C Murphy

Pressed for Time is a (very) short story which is the basic precursor to the film In Time (which starred Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried I believe), a film that I enjoyed a lot. Since watching In Time, I have always been intrigued as to where the concept came from, maybe in some way I wasn't convinced that Hollywood could come up with something so original. I looked for ages, and then today just by chance, I stumbled upon Pressed for Time and I had an answer. Due to the short length, really only a couple of pages, a plot summary isn't really possible, so instead this review is going to simply be my thoughts on reading.

A threat to all she holds dear lies in the North and her heart is not the only thing she might lose. A massive army awaits in the mountain pass, surging closer to the gates of the southern lands. Nothing the Algardis army has done so far has dissuaded their march forward and Ciardis finds out that her powers to enhance are needed now more than ever.

As she faces her greatest fears on the battlefields and her heart is torn between her love of Sebastian and loyalty to her family, Ciardis must choose her fate carefully. For in her path, lies the destiny of the empire.

This third novel continues the story of Ciardis Weathervane from “Sworn To Transfer”.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: The Curse Giver by Dora Machado

I received a copy of The Curse Giver in exchange for my review as a part of this blog tour.

Because final year is a lot more demanding already (I've been back a week!) than I thought it would be, I have group meetings all weekend for coursework, so though I will finish The Curse Giver in time, I may not be able to write a review at the end of the book as normal. So at the moment you have my thoughts as I'm reading (its Friday by the way!)

Read on to find out what I think so far and for the blog tour and giveaway!

Book: Le Voisin by Valentine Day

The title Le Voisin translates to 'the neighbour' and as the title suggests, this book is in French (as far as I am aware there is no English version available but I don't know that for sure).

Valentine is an erotic fiction writer, who is surprised when her new downstairs neighbour returns her cat and she discovers that he is a very attractive student. Over drinks to say thank you, they discuss writing and Marc agrees to rewrite one of Valentine's erotic scene in his own style. Once he has done this, and they've been on a bad date, things start to get steamy between the two of them and new bonds are formed...

Blog Tour: The Astral Ordinance Book II by Meltem Y K

I received a copy of The Astral Ordinance Book II in exchange for my review as a part of this blog tour. I read this book as a stand alone and have not read the previous book (well I haven't read the previous book yet!)

Ethan and Jayna have been banned from seeing each other on Earth, but are allowed to marry on the Astral Plane, which is an alternative dimension. The couple are demon fighters, who extinguish demons and do good deeds on earth. On the other hand is Quintin, who is tricked into becoming a demon's slave as a young boy, and has become a Shadow. Upon visiting the Underworld he meets Cassandra, a fellow Shadow, who wants to capture a demon and use it to transport a hidden cache of gold to earth. The fight between good and bad is on in The Astral Ordinance Book II, both within the characters themselves and between them.

Book: Side Saddle by Alice K Cross

Set in the Victorian era, Lucy is a keen horsewoman, her only passion being to ride. But as a noble she is expected to marry and bare children. Far from thinking about her marriage, Lucy finds herself thinking of the new stable master, Sam Smith, and the mystery he poses. Then one day she figures out Smith's secret, much to Sam's horror, but Lucy couldn't care less about it and approaches Sam to teach her to ride astride, little realising what that will lead to...

In order to talk about the thing that most struck me about Side Saddle, I am going to have to include a major plot spoiler during my review, you have been warned!

Interview with Brandt Legg

Laura: I would like to welcome and thank you for joining me on trips down imagination road! Please, tell us a little about yourself.

Brandt: I’m the author of the Inner Movement trilogy. Outview and Outin, books one and two came out earlier this year. Outmove, book three, will be released on 11.12.13.

Before writing fantasy thrillers, I was a photographer, newspaper columnist, magazine publisher, FM radio deejay, and teenage millionaire (that one didn’t end so well). I made mistakes and spent a year in federal prison for financial improprieties.  As you might imagine, that changed my life. It’s been twenty years since my release, but the harsh memories of that year remain strong and continue to shape my writing.
