Blog Tour & Giveaway: No Refuge by Annie Nicholas

I received a copy of No Refuge in exchange for my review.

Lucille and Brody live in a world where being human is a death sentence. Forced to live in disguise because they otherwise risk being sold to the Ko to be killed, despite loving each other they have never seen how each other truly looks. While Lucille is fascinated by the past of the human race, Brody concentrates more on the future, thinking that there is a colony of humans out there on a planet where they can feel safe. After a run in with a Ko where the Ko recognises Lucille as a possible human, all of their plans seem to just disappear in smoke.

I don't feel like I've read a good sci-fi in a while (it probably wasn't actually that long ago but still) and I was really looking forward to reading No Refuge, and I am glad to say that it didn't fail to deliver. There was action, romance and an interesting and totally different universe.

I think that the main story line seemed to focus on the romance between Brody and Lucille, though their relationship was already established prior to No Refuge. One of the things I liked about it was the fact that they actually considered the consequences of having sex (and so didn't). I'm not sure about anyone else, but sometimes I wonder why people in situations where they don't have control to birth control think about the fact they don't have any. The other thing I liked about their relationship was the fact that, despite it hurting, they were both willing to sacrifice for each other.

The concept wasn't like any other sci-fi book that I've read, admittedly I have read dystopias where hiding something about yourself is pretty much mandatory, but not to the extent of hiding the person's species. One thing I found that this led to was vivid descriptions of the other races, and the author even managed to explain how the characters managed to make themselves look like other species. Its the attention to detail that I like!

I'm also very excited for the fact that this says its book 1...I very much want to read more from this series!

Book Description:

Hunted to near extinction by an alien race called the Ko, my people have run from Earth and drifted so far among the stars we can’t remember the way back. We live everywhere, but call nowhere home. The Ko want us erased from existence and memory. They don’t even want our DNA in the space dust. Humans disguise themselves as other alien species and hide in plain sight. It’s the only way we can survive.

I believe in the myth of Earth. I’ve even discovered a bona fide book written in the dead language of my people. My man, Brody, dreams of a secret human colony. He’s searched for years, hunting any rumor we’ve run across, and finally he’s made contact. Usually, he’s the one grounding me to station and keeping my head out of the atmosphere. Time for me to return the favor…that is, if I can ditch the Ko who’ve discovered me, thanks to my incessant artifact-hunting. If we don’t make our rendezvous, and the Ko don’t kill me, Brody just might…

CONTENT WARNING: Aliens, cargo ships, and a fast paced race against all odds.
