Blog Tour: Accession by Terah Edun

I received a copy of Accession in exchange for my review.

Katherine is the younger daughter of the coven Queen and never expected to be the heir, until a disaster occurs and her sister, Rose, dies. Along with her cousin Cecily, Katherine wants to discover what really happened to Rose, but other things, such as stepping into her role as the heir to the Coven, get in the way. Whereas her sister had been primed to do the job, Katherine can't help but feel not up to the task, particularly as her own witch gift isn't yet fully under control...and though she may not do things the most conventional way, she gets things done. Complicating matters more is the reappearance of her ex-boyfriend, Ethan, who is actually more than he seems, and yet he is the one closest to giving her the answers that she's looking for.

I can't believe this book ended there! Well I can because it was an amazing read, but I want more of it now! I've read several of Edun's other books (all of the books currently available in the Courtlight series and the Crown Service series) and the thing that really struck me with Accession is that I had to keep reminding myself that it was the same author. I don't mean that in a bad way at all, but the worlds were so vastly different that it made Accession more enjoyable because of that.

The world that Edun created in Accession was an alternative version of the one we live in today, though with a knowledge of magical races. What I couldn't help but notice was the richness with which the various species were woven together with the world, and I do wonder how many more haven't even been mentioned yet! Each of the non-human (so those that weren't weres, Coven or bog standard human) characters maintained distinct and varied personalities (though the trolls were similar to each other, but they're trolls) which again added to the world. My favourite being Gestrap (and I now know what a kobold is...never heard of them before!)

There are several mysteries that are still unanswered at the end of Accession, namely where a certain character is and how Rose died, though there are a few other things that I'm wondering about. I'm intrigued as to the part that Cecily's father could play, and how the higher Courts fit into the world (as Katherine is just learning about their true nature so are we as the reader). The other main thing I'm intrigued about is Ethan.

I can't decide if Ethan is a love interest for Katherine, or even if I want him to be. I really want to know the reason they broke up, its been hinted at but I think it goes deeper than any 'normal' teenage relationship problems. Also I want to know what Ethan is! Plus there seems to be a building tolerance to his presence from Katherine's side, and considering how the book ended I'm really interested to see how that dynamic progresses.

Basically this is a great book. It had a fast paced plot interlaced with politics that didn't over reach the various characters. Every day problems (such as school and boyfriends) weren't forgotten and the world and the creatures in it were richly created. Definitely a great new series!

Accession
(Sarath Web series, bk #1)
By Terah Edun

Blurb:
Sixteen-year-old Katherine Thompson wasn’t trained to rule a coven. That was her sister – perfect, beautiful Rose. But when a mysterious plane crash kills off the heir presumptive of the Sandersville coven she has no choice.

After stepping in to fill her sister’s shoes, Katherine realizes she didn’t have a clue – faery wars, depressed trolls and angry unicorns are just the beginning.

For centuries, her family has served the high Queens on both sides of the Atlantic but it is a well-known rule that mid-level witches stay away from high-level Queens.
But when Katherine’s youngest cousin vanishes without a trace in the Atlanta court and no one wants to investigate, Katherine decides to step into the darkness on her own. She will soon discover that nothing, in a queen's court, is as it seems.

As Mrs. Peabody narrowed her eyes, sniffed, and then turned to pick on another student, Katherine drifted off. In a daydream, a memory, a premonition, or something that was all of those things in one. She watched through the frosty window as a maelstrom of black clouds, heavy lightning, and rain appeared in the morning sky.

For a moment she felt a sharp pain, the same kind she felt when her mother had fractured her knee surveying corn last week. She’d known the moment the Queen of Sandersville had fallen and had felt her mother’s pain from miles away. She had asked Rose about it later. After chiding her about releasing a powerful flare of magic in response and setting an acre of forest on fire in the process, as if Katherine had had a choice, Rose had explained that she’d also started to sense the pain of others late in her fifteenth year.

But this ache was different. It was worse, and she had no idea what was causing it. Then she felt her gifts rise. The dark gifts. The dangerous part of her that was her witch’s gift. The part of every witch and warlock’s magic that was innate to them, unique to them. That one special gift that made every coven member different from the rest. That couldn’t be duplicated with spells or trapped with magic. Rose’s was her affinity to plants. Their mother’s was her command over earth. But Katherine’s was unlike either of those. It wasn’t weird and unique, like Thu Kim’s ability to awaken awareness in inanimate objects, or cool, like Connor’s telepathy. No, hers was a call. A call that brought destruction in its wake.

With a shock, Katherine snapped out of her vision. She could feel her power building in a swirl of darkness in the pit of her stomach. Like a twister, it was ready to emerge. Standing up in a hurry, she ran between the desks in an effort to get out the door. To get somewhere quiet. Somewhere safe where she wouldn't hurt anybody.

She was holding on by a thread.

A thread that broke when Mrs. Peabody snapped, “Katherine Thompson, sit down!”
