Working with MYTH has had Renna turning over a new leaf, though she still looks at things differently from the more orthodox members of the organisation. With the team on the run and Renna left behind at headquarters to be experimented on (voluntarily) the clock is ticking to discover exactly who the traitor is and to defeat them. Renna uses all the skills that she gained become the greatest thief in the universe (the Star Thief) to try and work out who Pallas is and to become reunited with Finn and Viktus, along with the rest of the crew of the Athena.
OH MY! The last line! Which I can share because we already know who the Star Thief is (pretty much since the start of the first book...
"Someone found out the truth about the Star Thief."I'm dying for more from this series already! To be clear the plot from Athena's Ashes was completely tied up (in a very exciting and sometimes worrying finale) and it didn't feel like the author just left it hanging, but that quote just makes me want to dive back in! More importantly though it gives me hope that there will be more from this great series that I can dive back into!
Renna's character development has definitely kicked up a notch in this book. Whereas in the previous one she was very slow to trust, she is starting to in this book, and not just trusting Finn and Viktus, but other secondary characters too. Though I was also glad to see that she didn't stray far from who she was and that that trust could easily be broken, I know that isn't necessarily a good thing but it is in line with Renna's character and that is what was important. The thing is though in this book is that she does progress, just at the speed of someone who has been badly hurt in the past.
The romance between Finn and Renna was definitely interesting, mainly because there was only really one side that was made clear (though narrated in the third person the narrative always followed Renna). Though saying that Finn's actions made his feelings very clear. The other thing that made it interesting was that a lot of the development of feelings happened when they weren't together and when Renna was thinking about Finn and what he meant to her. I don't think I've ever seen that done in such a way before, but what it did manage to do was to fit the rest of the story line and the romance together seamlessly.
There was a definite element of against the clock in this book, namely in getting things done before Renna became a cyborg hybrid because the implant is taking over her brain (again not a spoiler, it was already known from the first book). It wasn't the only thing that kept the plot moving, there was plenty of action as well, but it did mean that I really didn't want to put the book down.
I found that Viktus was much more likable in this book too, before he was a pirate and he had a past 'romantic' relationship with Renna (well...more a 'let's-act-on-this-mutual-attraction-until-someone-pays-me-to-kill-you-ship) and that kind of clouded my judgement. But in this book his relationship with Renna has changed and he's developed a bit of a bromance with Finn, not to mention his designs on one of the crew members of Athena, Keva. The secondary characters in general got a good amount of development in this book, and I'm looking forward to seeing where they go next.
As with the first book, Athena's Ashes had me gripped from the first page, and I'm definitely looking forward to more in the series!
