Jon Reynell has hit rock bottom. With his teammates either dead or mated, the only way he can cope is with alcohol. Despite the fact he shouldn't, Jon returns to his hometown, to find Tori; his mate and his old best friend's daughter. The best friend that he thought was dead. But Vinnie had predicted he'd find his mate soon, and that she'd be in danger.
This is the first of the Immortal Ops books that I've read, and knowing that it was the 7th book in the series did have me a little worried, but it was completely unfounded. Short of knowing how some of the romances will end in previous books, Separation Zone works as a standalone (but with a higher story arc). I didn't feel that anything was spoiled and I found it really easy to get into the story.
I loved that Jon was a tiger shifter, they seem to be a very undervalued shifter race (and I just love tigers!) and I thought that the way his shifter worked was good. It wasn't just at will, but also when he got particularly angry (or turned on) which makes a change from just at will shifters.
I also really liked the fact that Tori had powers of her own, and the way that worked with the mating bond, it meant that she was on a more even footing with Jon and could hold her own against him...or at least she could if she wanted to. Her relationship with her grandmother was also great, that woman came out with some great comments!
And this is going to sound like a silly thing to really like, but I liked the fact that Jon resisted the urge to just have sex with Tori at the first available opportunity. It wasn't that she was against the idea, but more that he seemed to be quite considerate about it. It was just something a little different!
I enjoyed Separation Zone and am looking forward to more in the series!
