At 18, Tori lacks confidence, both in her appearance and herself, but one person can see through that, her older brother's friend Grant. Grant knows that he shouldn't, but he can't help but fall for Tori, but things change and when Grant leaves, Tori takes a turn for the worse, becoming more obsessed with her looks and changing her appearance. Her new confidence works for a while, but after a while things always tend to fade...
I've now read a few books by Ryan Ringbloom, and I must say that once again she's proved that her books tell the real story. This isn't a book about a perfect romance, between perfect characters, instead its about the pressures that young people feel about their bodies and their attractiveness. Its a big deal, and not often something that is dealt with in books.
Tori has something that almost every woman will be able to relate to; body issues. And then she has the men in her life making it worse (whether that is valid blame or not it happens), and Tori then takes it to the extremes with her looks and the changes she makes. It is kind of scary in a way simply because of how many women would make some of those, even simple ones like dying their hair.
The relationship between Grant and Tori had several different stages, there was sweet, then there was the pining, then there was the matured version. The sweet version was good, it gave Tori some confidence, but it didn't feel quite as real as the later more mature version. It also led to the pining, which was an important path for both characters. Even before Grant's POV came along it was clear that he cared for Tori a lot.
Fake Boobs was a journey. Though I didn't find Tori quite as relateable as the other characters in previous books I've read, that was more to do with me and my experiences than the character herself, and I still found that this was well done and realistic! If a bit scary!
