Casey Black has lived his life under the radar after escaping from genetic testing. Though labelled a failed experiment, Casey finds himself able to shift into a wolf, and when the woman he knows to be his is kidnapped, he'll do anything in his power to get her back to him safe and sound. Harmony has known about the paranormal world for years, especially with her own magic being a part of her life. But knowing about that side of life has led to danger, though she's determined to get out.
Broken Communication is the first novella in the Immortal Outcasts series, but is also related to the Immortal Ops world. I love that Roth has several interconnected series as each of the books adds to the already established world. I think this book gives a lot of background to the genetically modified supernaturals.
I liked that Harmony and Casey already knew each other before the start of the book, it gave them somewhere to base their relationship off which does get rid of some of the risks associated with instalove. Though actually, given Roth's previous world building, I'm surprised they lasted that long!
I definitely loved that Harmony was a strong female character. She was willing to attempt to get herself out of bad situations, even when feeling fear. She also admitted to doing what she needed to do in order to keep herself in the right place. Plus she knew what she wanted and she wasn't afraid to get it.
This book also gave more Gus and Bill time, and I really like those two, they're sweet! Though I am wondering exactly where their stories will take them!
