Synopsis (from Goodreads): Alexandra has been a wife in name only since her husband abandoned her four years before at the church, one very humiliating afternoon. Exasperated by his continued absence, she decides to take matters into her own hands, traveling up to London to put a daring plan into action. Lord Seddon has quite the reputation as a ladies man, but as the mysterious and alluring Mrs. Hermitage, Alex is determined to snare his interest and in doing so, extract her revenge. Even if she must seduce her own husband to do obtain it...
The Mistress at Midnight is a standalone story in the Midnight Masquerade series. The storyline does not require you to read the previous books in the series and my review will not contain spoilers for the previous two books in the series.
This series caught my attention with a different take on the traditional Regency romance and The Mistress at Midnight definitely continued this. Alex was trying to dupe everyone (including her husband) into thinking she was someone else basically to prove a point. It made the story daring but kind of sweet at the same time.
There was good chemistry between Alex and Deacon, but there are only a few instances where things move pass stolen kisses on page if you don't like that kind of thing. I liked that for both characters the chemistry was true but the two of them both had difficulities quite accepting it.
I liked seeing the female friendship between Alex and Sally too. So often it seems that Regency heros and heroines don't have anyone else in their lives, but both Deacon and Alex had people of their own. The story also focused on some of problems in Sally's love life, It fleshed out the story in a good way.
This was an enjoyable read from an enjoyable series.
